The research and development design engineer, designs mechanical components for our high pressure pump equipment. This job will focus on the design, development and engineering of new and existing pumps and pump systems used in the mining and industrial segments.

This position is located in Manchester, with possible travel abroad.

In addition to annual initiatives, the key accountabilities of this position are:

Design and Development

  • Lead design and development activities for high pressure pump products and systems for continuous operation in hostile environments and resist attack from heat, water, acidity and dirt to prolong full lifetime and extend the running time between routine maintenance.
  • Provide engineering input including concept design and drawings, Bill Of Material structures, General Arrangement drawings, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, Operating & Maintenance manuals, manufacturing drawings and compilation of technical training programs.
  • Support the sales and product marketing teams in assessing the market needs and providing design solutions.
  • Provide design validation including reverse engineering of components and assign material, tolerances & surface finishes to reverse engineered parts, do tolerance Stack-up Analysis and assign GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and company standards, conclude FEA, Mold Flow, CFD, Sustainability and DFMEA reports.
  • Lead design calculations and apply fundamental calculations (Bending Moment Diagrams, Deflection, Force, Pressure, Stress/Strain, Bearing Life) to optimize parts design. Apply casting processes (sand, die etc.) and machining processes (milling, drilling, tapping, boring, turning, grinding, welding etc.) to design parts of RMI products. Able to size & select standard items (Bearings, Couplings, Gaskets/Seals, Fasteners, Channels/Angles, Fittings etc

Project Management

  • Lead product developments and project manage all related product development project files and manuals.
  • Work with relevant departments to create and monitor project plans for active projects.
  • Coordinate changes to the relevant personnel.
  • Participate in weekly project meetings.
  • Liaise with other functions to keep projects on plan for budget and delivery.

Product Support and improvement

  • Support the rationalisation of existing products and component parts.
  • Support product improvements for lower material, lower cost and improved reliability.
  • Work with the sourcing team to monitor cost reduction targets for the standardised product offerings.
  • Coordinate changes to the global sales and service teams.

Role Requirements

  • University Degree in Mechanical or Hydraulic Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with engineering, manufacturing and distribution operations in an mining environment.
  • Experience of a SAP or ERP system
  • Experience of PDM or data management system for document control.
  • Hydraulic and mechanical engineering design of positive displacement plunger pump design.
  • Design of components - Gears, Bearings, Crank shafts, Rams, Connecting Rods, Spring, System valves
  • Knowledge in underground mining industry applications, standards and product testing
  • Hands-on FEA / Sustainability / Stack up analysis / DFMEA and knowledge on Mold Flow / CFD
  • Hands-on GD&T per ASME Y14.5 (any year/version) and creation of manufacturing and assembly drawings per ASME / DIN / BIS drafting standards
  • Hands-on 3D modeling and 2D drafting of parts per industry standards using any of the 3D CAD software
    • SolidWorks, UGNX, Pro-E, CATIA. SolidWorks preferred
  • Knowledge of commonly used materials for high pressure and fire safe products, their key mechanical properties and application
  • Experience in modeling and drafting of complex castings, machined parts, welded frames, family parts and assemblies are required
  • Experience of IECEx or explosive atmospheres
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high pressure, above 100 bar, hydraulic design ensuring compliance to Pressure Equipment Directive or ASME standards.
  • Ability to communicate in an open and authentic manner in all situations
  • The ability to write reports/complete paperwork accurately and legibly.
  • The ability to plan and manage a varied workload and have a pro-active and flexible attitude.
  • Ability to break down complex problems in a simplified way, conduct root cause analysis and provide clear, well thought-out recommendations.
  • Self-directed with ability to work autonomously and collaboratively and a focus on results.
